After months of pretending Bob Marshall doesn’t exist, the Gilmore bloggers are finally realizing that they have to actually get more votes at the convention than Marshall has in order to be the nominee. Unfortunately, as they look for the needle of damaging information in the haystack of Bob Marshall’s record defending Virginians, they’re getting a little lost.
I’ll start with two gun bills from 2000 that has Spank That Donkey all lathered up. At first blush, they don’t seem very good, and I can see why the Gilmore people would think they have something here.
Trouble is, they neglect to note that each proposed bill would not apply to anyone with a concealed-carry permit. In fact, when Gun Owners of America founder Larry Platt asked Marshall about these bills in 2000, Marshall made this clear – and Pratt (who’s intolerance for gun restrictions make the National Rifle Association look like Handgun Control, Inc.) withdrew his objections (I would also note that GOA’s political arm endorsed Marshall earlier this year, which they never would have done if these bills were nearly as bad as STD fears).
Pratt wasn’t the only one. In 2001, the bills in question were incorporated into Johnny Joannou’s HB395, which passed the General Assembly on greased skids and was signed into law in March of 2001.
Who was the Governor of Virginia who signed the bill? Jim Gilmore!
I guess he was for the bill before he was against it.
